About us
An American treasure… In 1668, merchant and ship-owner John Turner built a house on Salem Harbor that was destined to become one of America’s most beloved historic homes. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007, The House of the Seven Gables is best known today as the setting of world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel. In 1910, Salem philanthropist Caroline Emmerton restored the house and opened it to the public as a museum, using proceeds from ticket sales specifically to fund settlement work that benefited immigrant families. Over a century later, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is dedicated to continuing Emmerton’s mission of preservation and education. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement is a 501(c) 3 charitable nonprofit organization. We are supported by membership, annual donations, and visitation income. We do not receive federal funds to support our mission of education and preservation. Please consider a donation or becoming a member to help us continue our work in the community. The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is a 501(c)(3) charity.

The House of the Seven Gables’ Board President, Elizabeth McKeigue, has been announced as the staff inductee for Salem Sate’s 2025 Civic Engagement Hall of Fame! We wish you the biggest congratulations, Elizabeth! 🎉 Repost from @salemstatecce Elizabeth McKeigue is Dean of the Library at Salem State University, where she directs the Frederick E. Berry Library and oversees the Salem State University Archives. She has served on the Board of Trustees for The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association for 6 years and is currently President of the Board. Before moving to the North Shore, she was the Associate University Librarian for Public Services at Santa Clara University, near San Francisco. She began her career as a librarian at Harvard University’s Widener Library, where she held increasingly responsible leadership positions. During that time, she also volunteered with Harvard’s Memorial Church, assisting their program that distributed grant funding to Boston-area non-profit social service organizations. Before Harvard, she worked in the library at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. While living in D.C., she volunteered as a teacher of English in a program that served new immigrants, as well as the families of foreign service officers. 🧡 Elizabeth McKeigue will be making her honorary donation to The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. The House of the Seven Gables, founded as a settlement house in 1908, has served as a place of remembrance for immigrant communities, especially those immigrating from Poland, Ireland, and Italy, and has worked to help their immigrant neighbors in building community across generations and cultures.
